About Vianina

The illustrated city maps give our fond memories a happy new home. Would this way of looking at places be available in Google Maps, I think they would call it “Heart View”.

Behind Vianina is multi-award-winning designer and illustrator Nina Simone Wilsmann: I grew up in the small medieval town of Wasserburg am Inn in Upper Bavaria and have been living in beautiful Vienna for over 15 years. In between I also lived in Augsburg, Munich, Barcelona, Mexico City and Budapest. After studying graphic design, I worked for a few years as an art director for various design offices.

Vianina in the museum

In 2012 I became self-employed and founded my label Vianina. I have worked for clients such as Sony, IBM, Hewlett & Packard, Bang & Olufsen and the City of Vienna and have been published in many media. My maps have been exhibited at the MAK (Vienna Museum of Applied Arts) and the Wien Museum, among others.

Traveling with my finger on the map

For as long as I can remember, I've been traveling with my finger on the map. I've always been fascinated by those places far away, beyond my child's imagination. Later I actually visited some of my dream places like Australia, Mexico or Vietnam. In addition, I have been drawing with great passion since I was little and it was therefore an almost logical step to combine these two passions and develop my own cartography style.

Hand-drawn maps

My aim was to render the peculiar perception of a child from the country side visiting for the very first time the city, that seems gigantic, over detailed, over expressed, and that happily rushes towards you, out of proportion, almost magically and somehow even quite bizarre.

My map illustrations are all hand-drawn by me personally over a period of months. Every detail, every house & every animal is illustrated with lot of love.

Commissioned Maps & Collaborations

I also draw or license maps for a diverse range of clients such as Sony, Bang & Olufsen, HP, IBM, and the City of Vienna.
