The Person Behind Vianina
I’m Nina Simone Wilsmann – designer, illustrator, and founder of Vianina.
I grew up in the medieval town of Wasserburg am Inn in Bavaria and have been living in Vienna for almost 20 years. Along the way, many places have shaped who I am and influenced my creative work, including Barcelona, Mexico City, Budapest, Munich, and Augsburg. My curiosity about different cultures and places continues to inspire me. Together with my husband and daughter, I often travel by camper van, discovering new destinations and gathering inspiration for future maps.
How It All Began
Ever since I was a child, I have been fascinated by maps. I would spend hours tracing distant places with my finger and dreaming of faraway destinations. At the same time, drawing was always one of my greatest passions.
Combining these two interests eventually led me to develop my own distinctive style: detailed, hand-drawn maps that blend geography, illustration, and storytelling. Over the years, I have been fortunate enough to visit many of the places I once dreamed about, from Australia and Mexico to Vietnam, finding endless inspiration along the way.
From Design Agencies to My Own Label
After studying graphic design, I worked for several years as an art director in renowned design agencies. In 2012, I founded my own label, Vianina, turning my passion for illustration and design into a full-time creative journey.
Since then, I have had the pleasure of working with international clients including Sony, IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Bang & Olufsen, and the City of Vienna. My illustrations have received multiple awards, been featured in publications, and exhibited at institutions such as the MAK – Museum of Applied Arts Vienna and the Wien Museum.
Created with Love for Detail
Every map is created through months of dedicated work. Every building, animal, and tiny detail is illustrated by hand. Piece by piece, these elements come together to form vibrant maps that go far beyond simple cartography.
Whether it is a city map, a country map, or a world map, each illustration invites you to explore, discover new details, and revisit cherished memories.
Through Vianina, I hope to celebrate the beauty and diversity of our world – one illustrated city, country, and continent at a time.
