Because Giving Up Is Not an Option for Her

Petra Errayes interviewed me over the phone for the magazine of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce. The conversation was so much fun, and it resulted in a really great article—thank you, Petra! 2020 turned out very differently for Austrian companies: instead of making profits, many had to make significant compromises due to the corona crisis. With creativity, optimism, and entrepreneurial spirit, Vienna's businesses are setting a good example and trying to make the best of the current situation.

AROUND THE WORLD WITH MAPS

Some careers start in early childhood: Graphic designer Nina Wilsmann has always loved drawing and has been fascinated by maps since she was a little girl. "I am incredibly fortunate to have been able to fulfill a lifelong dream by founding 'Vianina,'" says Wilsmann, who has already won several awards, including the German Design Award.

As a “one-woman show,” she works from home, which also benefits her young daughter. Her lovingly detailed repertoire includes world maps and city maps—mostly European cities like Vienna, Paris, and London, but also Sydney and New York—postcards, shopping bags, and city puzzles. "I was always very active at Christmas and Easter markets and was able to reach a wide audience. Many people even came to me because they had received one of my creations as a gift and wanted to purchase another one." The Easter market is, of course, not happening this year due to Corona, and the opportunity to reach tourists—"my graphic creations are a popular souvenir"—is also lost. "Of course, it was initially a slap in the face. But I don’t bury my head in the sand. Optimism is a driving force that has always propelled me forward."

She started her online shop back in 2012 when e-commerce was still in its infancy. "That’s benefiting me now during the crisis," the creative entrepreneur is convinced.

When asked about her target group, Wilsmann says she can’t define it precisely. "That even makes me proud. Because from children to adults of all ages, they all enjoy what I create." A Vienna map "made by Wilsmann" also hangs in the foyer of a municipal district office in Vienna, and there have been collaborations with companies like Sony.

"As long as there are people who love to give beautiful things as gifts, or to treat themselves, I can shape the future of 'Vianina' positively in every sense of the word."
